LEAN MANUFACTURING THROUGH THE USAGE OF A DIGITAL TWIN TECHNOLOGY
Abstract
The era of digitization and, in particular, Industry 4.0 is forcing companies effectively manage the entire value stream and at the same time to increase production flexibility as a result of customer requirements. This requires eliminating all waste not only in manufacturing, but also in administrative processes leading to lean processes. A number of methods have been developed in the historical development. They systematically eliminate the various categories of waste in the production process. Their unique combination then developes a system that increase added value and decrease non-added value in production. These methods are based on the collection of historical data, their analysis, finding the optimal solution in terms of achieving specific process metrics and making changes. This cycle is repeated several times. The development of ICT technologies and the relatively high system performance enable the development of effective tools that quite accurately copy the real production system, eventually a real product, a so-called production digital twin or a product digital twin. The production digital twin system then allows monitor the dynamics of the production system and thus predict its behaviour in the digital environment. This will allow a faster process leading to lean processes without the risk of any necessary investment. The paper focuses to usage of digital twin technology in the field of value chain analysis in production through Value Stream Mapping (VSM) and their optimization by Value Stream Design (VSD).
