Abstract

The regularities of the evolution of the theory of sustainable socio-economic development of regions in Russia and foreign countries are revealed. It is concluded that the foundation of the modern theory of sustainable regional development of foreign countries is the fundamental provisions of neoclassical, neo-Keynesian and institutional theory, as well as spatial economics. They are the base of highly developed countriesВ’ regional policies, aimed at ensuring sustainable, balanced social and economic development of the territories. It is proved that the Russian theory of sustainable development is characterized by the imposition and interlacing of various methodological approaches. Its evolution took place in a short time, in the conditions of radical changes in the social formation and priorities of the state policy of countryВ’s spatial development country. It is explained that the key paradigms for the development of domestic research on the problems of sustainable development of the regions are currently the creation of a theory of sustainable development of territories that meets the "challenges" of modern society and the development of theoretical and methodological bases for regional policies aimed at ensuring long-term social and economic sustainability of territories development. It is proved that the regional socio-economic policy, coordinated with the macroeconomic policy of the state, is a necessary condition for resolving territorial contradictions in the development of the national economy. The following general positions in the views of scientists of different schools and directions of economic thought are revealed: regional socio-economic development occurs in conditions of instability that affects all spheres of human life; the problem of ensuring the sustainability of development has a pronounced spatial nature; in the current economic conditions, the interaction of the economy as a scientific discipline (economic theory) and the economy as a sphere of managerial activity (economic policy) is being strengthened.
