TRANSLATION AND ADAPTATION OF THE SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL COMPETENCE QUESTIONNAIRE FOR HUNGARIAN POPULATION

Abstract

Objectives: Measuring childrenВ’s social and emotional competences is very important in order to develop adequate preventions and interventions. In this study the translation and adaptation of the Social-Emotional Competence Questionnaire (SECQ) at a Hungarian population was examined. The main aim of the study was to analyze the factor structure and psychometric properties of the SECQ in a Hungarian sample from Transylvania, Romania. Methods: The questionnaire was filled out by secondary school students (N=560). Participants were selected from a Hungarian minority population. Male (N=284) and female (N=276) students were examined. The age of the participants ranged from 10 to 15 (M=12.13, SD=.93). The questionnaire contains 25 items and 5 dimensions of social-emotional competence: self-awareness, social awareness, self-management, relationship management and responsible decision making. Results: Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) for the Social-Emotional Questionnaire Hungarian form (SECQ-Hu) showed similar factor structure to the original form. The results showed a good internal consistency (Cronbach alphaВ’s ?=.89). Conclusions: In conclusion, the psychometric properties of SECQ-Hu showed that the questionnaire is a valid and reliable scale for researchers and practitioners too.
