THE MORAL ORDER OF WORK
Abstract
The social representation of work has been shaped by several factors along the history, each having its importance in relation with the cultural context of each era. In the modern secular society, the justification of work has lost its ethical-religious side to a large extent, but, despite its primarily economic determination, one cannot ignore the psychological aspects. By offering to God his work, the person is associated to the redemptive work of the Christ (by considering the work as dignified by the Christ Himself - as He worked during His lifetime, we reason the need to conscientiously and honestly work). The documents of the Catholic Church insist on the observation of human rights: the work must be paid such that the human being could to provide (for himself and his close ones) a decent living, as well as a dignified one (social, material, spiritual and cultural). The economic process should be adapted to the needs of the human person, by adapting to the different contexts of culture and civilization, while respecting the individual characteristics of people and eliminating the excessive exploitation of human work (most often the person becomes the servant of his own work, either due to an incorrect individual perception of the purpose of work, or because of the excessive exploitation of his work by unworthy leaders).
