PSYCHOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF GIORGIO DE CHIRICOВ’S SELF PORTRAITS
Abstract
The aim of this work is to analyze the self-portraits of De Chirico with a methodology of psychological investigation. The figurative elements are individually examined in order to understand the psychological determinants of the painter. In order to paint their own portrait, the artists have to deal with the mirror, with their own double, but above all, referring to Winnicott (1990) with the mirroring of themselves in the face of the other. According to Ferrari (2002), in the relationship with the portrait and the self-portrait comes into play the relationship with death and the fear of death that is always present in man. The idea of a double that can survive the caducity of the mortal body would help to overcome the fear of the end. De Chirico, who had a great success in life respects the classical aesthetics, interprets but also respects the external world but a bit like all the artists could not completely translate all the images his mind and heart suggested.
