"MY SCHOOL" - TEACHERS' VIEWS ON SCHOOL PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT IN ROMANIA
Abstract
The aim of our study is to investigate the way teachers see the physical environment of their school, and what they would need for better teaching abilities and skills for 21 century students. Physical learning environment can have a holistic impact on userВ’s performances, teachers and students alike. In Romania, 60% of primary and secondary schools in rural areas and 20% in urban areas are not equipped with libraries, 72% of rural areas and 30% of urban areas lack laboratories and only 32% of rural gymnasiums and 71% in the urban area are equipped with a sports hall. 175 teachersВ’ online responses, from rural and urban schools all over Romania, to a questionnaire based on OECD School User Survey were analysed. The answers point to teachers desire to have more variety of school spaces, like cafeteria, library, festivities hall, gym, spaces for relaxation and preparing the lessons, or group working areas. The answers to the questionnaire indicate that teachers want their opinions about the upgrade of physical learning environments to be taken into account. The study provides valuable information for local authorities, policymakers and the school community, on how the environment supports teachers and students learning needs in Romanian schools.
