Abstract

This paper presents a description of the main characteristics of the German banking language, especially from the perspective of lexicology. The paper classifies the banking and finance language, which is characterized by the specific lexical features and terms, as a language for special purposes. The banking terminology and other words relating to banking are used in various forms of the internal and external banking communication, such as documents for bank clients, contracts, printed forms or announcements but also in advertising, publications or flyers. The paper provides classification of text types relating to banking and their functions within the frame of the banking relations. Furthermore, it works with the lexical instruments of banking language and focusses especially on banking terms, neologisms, anglicisms, compounds, acronyms and phraseological units.
