INESE ZANDERE’S “THE SHIP’S LOG BOOK” AS AN EXAMPLE OF HIBRIDITY

Abstract

The given research is focused on the study of the book by a contemporary Latvian writer and journalist Inese Zandere titled “The Ship’s Log Book” (Ku?a žurn?ls), which was published in 2016. The author of the research views it from the perspective of hybrid texts and analyses the shift of genre boundaries between poetic texts and journalism. The subtitle of the book is “Notes, essays, excerpts, letters, conversations”. In the title of the book a lexeme denoting a familiar document is used – a log book, which is known as a document officially accepted by certain institutions of each sea country and used during the sailing time to record the climate (time, place, temperature, wind), the information about the ship’s work and any other relevant information. A parallel characteristic of the Latvian social climate is provided by the texts included in the book. The author does not specify their genre. She mixes the styles and genres, shifts the patterns and standards in order to create an influential narration about the experienced by-gone events, the people met, newly acquired knowledge and include them in the Latvian development discourse. The time of the events described in the book is the turn of the century: 1994 – 2007. Zandere offers her subjective evaluation of significant and marginal personalities, social and global events, Latvian and world landscapes, processes and the identity of an individual and the community and their transformation in the context of political cataclysms and global changes.
