SUCCESSFUL UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT PROFILE EXPLORATION: THE ROLE OF SKILLS, WILL, SELF-REGULATION AND CONTEXTUAL CHARACTERISTICS
Abstract
College is considered to be an important phase in the life of people. The obtained academic outcomes may impact the future of individuals in many areas. In our correlational study we analyze the role of intrinsic motivation (interest/enjoyment), self - regulation skills and contextual characteristics (stressful events, having a job, etc.) on the academic achievement of 150 minority undergraduate students from Transylvania. We have explored the above characteristics considering objective academic outcomes, starting from the high school leaving exam score (Baccalaureate) to the cumulative academic GPA. Our results show significant positive correlations of certain self-regulating skills with the chosen external criteria. The Baccalaureate score seemed to be to strongest predictor of performance, and from the contextual characteristics the presence of stressful events showed significant negative association with the GPA. The identified profile of the successful undergraduate student may be a useful finding for further investigations designed for fulfillment of academic potential.
