SOCIAL PROBLEMS OF PERSONS WITH INBORN GENDER IDENTITY DISORDER SYNDROME: REMARKS IN THE CONTEXT OF MEDICAL BACKGROUND
Abstract
The article deals with social and legal problems faced by persons with Inborn Gender Identity Disorder Syndrome (IGIDS) in fulfilling social roles consistent with the perceived gender. It seems that the social functioning of these persons is extremely difficult, because disapproval of the somatic/phenotype sex hinders their self-fulfilment. Legal (formal) conditions of their social existence depend on medical procedures, which in turn are related with many diagnostic problems. In Poland, there is no specific diagnostic algorithm that would provide a basis for legal gender recognition and reconciliation. The article is based on the analysis of data from 600 cases of persons with IGIDS. It should be noted that about 15 % patients reveal past suicide attempts in an interview. They are an indicator of the life discomfort caused by this developmental disorder. The objective of the article is to point at an important social problem, which is far from achieving optimum solutions. However, it leads to discrimination against such persons, which makes it difficult for them to function in the society. Negative attitudes of the social environment result mainly from the lack of knowledge and low social awareness as to the nature of this congenital disorder. Raising public awareness of the problem is the main motivation of the authors of the article.
