INFLUENCE OF PHYSICAL EFFORT OVER ELECTROMYOGRAPHY PARAMETERS AT DIFFERENT CATEGORIES OF ATHLETES

Abstract

Background The purpose of our study was to evaluate the electromyography activity at different categories of athletes (handball players, volleyball players, fencers), to compare the obtained results and to identify possible characteristic electromyography patterns, correlated to athletes specific physical activity, thus emphasizing the differences between the studied sportive activities. Methods The studied group was formed of 27 male athletes, 9 fencers, 9 handball players and 9 volleyball sportsmen, active for at least 5 years, exclusively in either one of the studied sports, with homogenous average ages, heights and weights. Syncron with the mechanogram, were performed surface EMG records to all studied athletes, during maximum isometric contractions, sustained through fatigue of fingers flexors from both hands, obtained by force traductor squeezing. To record muscular biopotentials, were used surface electrodes (BIOPAC) made from silver (Ag), the recording was performed simultaneously on EMG BIOPAC MP 150 two channlesand were used two active electrodes for each channel, the reference electode was placed on forearm distal extremity. Electrodes were connected to a complex acquisition and processing system BIOPAC MP 150, connected to a PC Pentium IV, whose program procceses the data offered by BIOPAC system. Results To facilitate the use and interpretation of the obtained parameters, they were divided in 4 categories: of time, of frequency, mixed and of mechanogram and for each one of the parameters, were calculated other characteristic indexes. For most of the mechanogram parameters, handball players presented the highest values, frequency parameters define superior values for voleyball players and fencers recorded the highest values for indexes like intercept, slope, percent variation, in the area of time and mixed parameters. Conclusions The obtained EMG patterns were different, characterizing most relevant the predominant type of physical effort specific to each studied sports. These patterns contribute to a correct selection of athletes and to sportive performances improvement, being so, a guide for trainers, helping them establish complete and complex specific professional training programs.
