TYPOLOGY OF CROSS-CULTURAL COMMUNICATIONS ON THE CAUCASUS IN THE STAGE OF EARLY FRONTIER

Abstract

Cross-cultural relations in the frontier area are distinguished by specific characteristics and complexity, due to the fact that frontier itself is a heterotopic space. There is no conventional typology of this type of relations that could be applicable to any Russian frontier (the Low Volga Region, Siberian, Caucasian, etc.). The article proposes original variant of cross-cultural communication typology of the early frontier of the North Caucasus region. We have identified three types of cross-cultural contacts: integrative, internal unstable and confrontational. They all co-exist in a rather complicated time-space interrelation in the Caucasus at the stage of early frontier. The early presence of the slavic ethnic elements in the North Caucasus region was dated to 1520 when several families settled on the Terek river. They got a name of mountain Cossacks. They were able to integrate into local ethnic traditions forming a special subethnic group among the Russians. But the growing presence of Russian ethnic elements also influenced the native ethnic groups in the region. And though integrative type of cross-cultural communications was dominant for this period, in the 19th century it gave place to another type of frontier conflict opposition because of the strengthening of Russian governmental presence on the frontier territory. And it opened space to a long Caucasian war. This military confrontation signified the beginning of another stage of frontier.
