Abstract

The Cantacuzinos were a very large imperial orthodox family. The complexity of their relations through kinship goes from the Ottoman dynasty through kinship with Orhan to kinship with the family of Aragon. We can say that these kinships anticipate the genealogical tree of the later Corvinus kinships. This aspect must be directly related to the closest CantacuzinosВ’ kinships, namely kinships to the Brankoviches. Brankovich is an old Nemanjic family, still undeterminable. They succeeded in imposing themselves through kinship with the Lazareviches and Mircea the ElderВ’s brother-in-law. Mircea the Elder was Hungarian WallachiaВ’s ruler. The Cantacuzino family played an important role in the idea of the late crusade. After the death of Theodore, DimitriВ’s son, the latter MathewВ’s son, the Cantacuzinos turn to Serbia. Irina, DimitriВ’s daughter marries George Brankovich. She becomes the ancestor of Matthias CorvinusВ’s first wife. Her brother, Thomas, becomes ruler of the Smederevo citadel, as well as George Sakataj, another proposed ascendant of the Cantacuzinos. Theodore Cantacuzino finds refuge in Serbia as well. The three brothers, sons of Theodore, would then come to Hungarian Wallachia. ThatВ’s why Sheitanoglu would claim some of his daughtersВ’ marriage with Lady ChiajnaВ’s successors. She was a Brankovich . That happened under Sokolovich protection, as a Cantacuzino, as we would see.
