STRUCTURE – PERFORMANCE RELATIONSHIP WITHIN STEEL INDUSTRY
Abstract
The paper deals with one of the most frequently tested relationship within industrial economics literature, namely structure – performance relationship. It is based on the theoretical background of structure – conduct - performance paradigm and review of results of related empirical findings in conditions of selected industries. The analytical part of the paper in applied on the conditions of steel industry primarily focusing on Slovakia. Besides evaluation of trends in steel industry development, the paper provides analysis of changes of market structure based on commonly used indicators such as the number and size distribution of enterprises in the industry. Subsequently, the evaluation of performance of the enterprises operating in steel industry is performed, based on indicators of productivity and profitability. The emphasis is then placed on testing the existence and the strength of relationship between market structure and performance using standard statistical methods, as correlation and regression analysis.
