URBAN REDEVELOPMENT STRATEGIES FOR HOSPITAL AREAS – NEW FUNCTIONS AND USES
Abstract
Hospitals and hospital complexes represent an important function in the urban fabric of cities. As usually closed and impassable areas, they have specific requirements for a good accessibility and for a constant implementation of innovations in healthcare and technologies. Old hospital complexes situated in city centres and their outdated hospital buildings are often not able to adopt the advances in healthcare and they become dysfunctional. New modern hospital complexes are developed in more suitable urban locations and old are redeveloped to host new urban functions and uses. We have examined the examples of architectural and urban transformations of old hospitals and hospital areas to learn the current trends in their urban and architectural redevelopment. Through urban design proposals we have tested the redevelopment strategies and the possibility to accommodate new functions and uses in the case study of the Old Town Hospital in Bratislava and in the case study of the Stummer`s Hospital in Topo??any, with the aim to open the areas to public use and to enhance the quality of urban environment.
