EXPRESSION OF THE INTERCULTURAL IDENTITY OF STUDENT TEACHERS IN LITHUANIA

Abstract

Intercultural identity of student teachers is defined as an aggregate of intercultural knowledge, communication skills, attitudes and personal features that are necessary for successful activity of teachers in the context of interaction among different cultures. The aforesaid components are implemented at the cognitive, behavioural and affective areas. In this context, the research problem is formulated as a question: what is the level of the intercultural identity of pre-service music teachers and what are the possibilities of its (self-) development at university? The sample of the research, which was carried out in 2017-2018, consisted of 155 Lithuanian and foreign (Chinese) student teachers, who chose studies at Lithuanian University of Educational Sciences (Music Education). The data were collected through studentsВ’ questionnaire survey (open-ended and closed-ended questions). The results indicated that the expression of student music teachersВ’ intercultural identity is not high in both subsamples (Lithuanian and Chinese students). The biggest differences occurred on the affective and behavioural level, especially concerning the experience of cultural activity and experience communicating with teachers and students of other cultures, as well as sensitivity to cultural differences.
