THE CULTURAL-HISTORICAL SITES OF TР’RGOVISTE MUNICIPALITY AND ITS SURROUNDINGS AND THEIR TOURISTIC ATTRACTIVENESS
Abstract
TargoviЕџte municipality, the capital city of DamboviЕЈa County, lies in the Plain with the same name, at the junction between this plain and the IalomiЕЈa Sub-Carpathians, at the absolute average altitude of 280 m, being crossed by the IalomiЕЈa River on about 18 km. Its first documentary mention dates since 1396. It was the capital city of Wallachia, between 1418 and 1714, and is considered one of the great cultural and civilizational centers of the Romanian Middle Ages. As residence of an impressive number of voivodes (33) in the past, the city benefits from a rich and various cultural-historical patrimony, offering a diversity of such sites. At the same time, in its surrounding area, at variable distances, there are other touristic sites, which, together with those belonging to the city itself, have constituted solid arguments for considering the town, surnamed the Wallachian Florence, as an important cultural centre, not only in the country, but also in the South-Eastern Europe.
