EVALUATION AND COMPARISON OF INNOVATION POTENTIAL OF REGIONS IN CENTRAL EUROPE

Abstract

The article focuses on analysis of the innovation environment of regions in Central Europe, using the example of the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia. Our own research is based on data of NUTS II and the construction of an aggregate indicator, which maps key economic, labour market and innovative indicators relevant for describing the innovative potential of the regions. The main sources of data were Eurostat and national statistics offices in selected countries. Metropolitan regions have a higher innovation potential, but there is a lag in the innovative development of agrarian and peripheral types of regions. In Central Europe, there is also a west-east differentiation between regions, where the western regions are generally more developed than regions in the eastern parts of each country. This spatial divergence is most significant in Slovak regions. It also turns out that the development of an innovative environment requires a comprehensive change in the economic and social environment, which is also conditioned by the innovation policy of states, financial support for localization of foreign investors with higher added value, and public support for the development of regional innovation systems.
