TRAGIC PAGES OF THE SOVIET DIPLOMACY (1917-1950)
Abstract
The author highlights some tragic aspects of the Russian diplomacy history after the October Revolution of 1917. The article provides an acute insight into the different periods in which the Soviet diplomatic service had to execute its foreign policy, but at the same time suffered severe losses due to Stalinist persecution. The attention is focused on four Peoples Commissars for Foreign Affairs: Lev Trotsky, Georgy Chicherin, Maxim Litvinov and Viacheslav Molotov. Particular tragic was the life of Lev Trotsky, sent in exile and then executed, and Georgy Chicherin, who was in serious disaccord with Stalinist regime. In the course of the Great Purges numerous Soviet diplomats suffered a grievous end being condemned and executed as peoples enemies. On the eve of the World War II many Soviet embassies remained without ambassadors. That is why some failures of the Soviet foreign policy can be attributed to that tragedy.
