CHRZANOW ON NINETEENTH-CENTURY AUSTRIAN MAPS

Abstract

Chrzanow is one of the many Polish cities and towns that found themselves on nineteenth-century maps of the Austrian and Austro-Hungarian empire. It is located in southern Poland, near Krakow, and its history dates back to the Middle Ages. The most important Austrian maps to be made in the nineteenth century include: The Map of Western Galicia (the so-called Heldensfeld's map, the First Military Survey), the Map of Galicia and Bukovina from the years 1861–1864 (the Second Military Survey), and the Map of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy from the years 1869–1887 (the Third Military Survey). The drafting of the so-called galician cadastres - the Land Cadastres of Galicia (the Josephine Metric and Franciscan Metric) was highly important to cities located in the territory of Galicia. These maps still remain a valuable source of information concerning the history and spatial development of historical cities and towns. Their analysis and in-depth familiarity, as well as comparisons with the current state, makes it possible to identify and describe urban layouts. This knowledge can be used in, among other fields, formulating current conservation policy. During work on the subject, the author familiarised herself with current literature and historical and contemporary maps, in addition to performing a query of the archives of, among other institutions, the National Archive in Krakow and that of the Irena and Mieczyslaw Mazaraki Chrzanow Museum. Afterwards, on-site visits were performed, along with a comparison of the collected materials.
