STUDENT INSTRUMENTALISTS ANXIETY LEVELS, LIFESTYLE AND SYMPTOMS OF IRRITABLE BOWEL DISEASE
Abstract
The aim of our study was to assess the relation between anxiety levels, lifestyle characteristics and irritable bowel disease (IBS) in instrumentists, as well as finding the prevalence of symptoms IBS in this group. Material and method. We performed a cross-sectional survey on instrumentalists studying in "Gheorghe Dima" Music Academy, Cluj-Napoca, Romania. We used validated questionnaires for music performance anxiety Music performance anxiety inventory for adolescents and for the irritable bowel disease - the Rome III criteria for IBD module. Also we used a questionnaire regarding demographic and lifestyle characteristics of the included subjects. Results. There were 40 instrumentists in the study with a mean age of 20 (1.29) years, mostly females. The IBS symptoms prevalence was 20 %. The mean IBS score was 12.18 (6.19). The anxiety median score was 3, with an interquartile range from 3 to 8. The odds of having IBS symptoms were 1.33 (95% CI 1.07 - 1.72) higher for each unit of anxiety score, p=0.016. Conclusions: we found a 20% prevalence of irritable bowel syndrome in instrumentists, similar to other studies, in the general population. There were a statistically significant association between higher levels of anxiety and the presence of symptoms of IBS.
