PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OF WOMEN IN POLISH HIGHER EDUCATION IN THE YEARS 2008-2016 – ANALYSIS AND ASSESSMENT

Abstract

In the Polish higher education, the career path covers two subsequent academic degrees (doctor and habilitated doctor), as well as the title of professor. Being awarded these degrees and title depends on the individual assessment of scientific achievement in the form of publications, participation in research projects and the degree of internationalization of scientific activities. Having the above universal legal and substantive conditions in mind, there are no objective barriers hindering the professional development of women in Polish higher education. By way of this paper, the authors attempt to verify this thesis with the use of analysis and assessment of share of women in the process of being awarded subsequent academic degrees and academic title in Poland in the years 2008-2016. To implement this objective, the article was divided into theoretical part containing information on the opportunities and barriers in scientific professional development of women and into empirical part that contains the analysis and assessment of statistical data concerning Polish higher education in the last decade. The research makes use of Central Statistical OfficeВ’s data on the Polish higher education and of statistical measures of dynamics and structure.
