Abstract

Starting from its expected contribution to national and regional development – as a result its major natural and cultural heritage potential, this paper proposes an inquiry into Romanian tourism's competitiveness using the data provided by the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report 2013 issued by the World Economic Forum. It aims to highlight the position of Romania in Central and Eastern Europe and to reveal its competitive advantages for the pillars envisaged in the mentioned report. A special emphasis is placed the on the information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure pillar, considering the huge impact of internet on the tourism market changes. Comments on the use of ICT for boosting the tourism competitiveness at regional level, with examples from Bucovina area – one of the most important tourist destinations in Romania – are provided. Based on the available data and facts interpretation and well as on the findings from specialized literature and policy documents, proposals are discussed with regard to the measures aiming to increase the Romanian tourism's competitiveness, especially from the perspective of the ICT use.
