Abstract

Joint education of pupils with special educational needs in mainstream education by means of support measures has been in place for some time in the Czech Republic. For quite a long time, these pupils have been educated in mainstream schools in the catchment area. However, Act No. 82/2015 Coll., which amends the Act on pre-school, elementary, secondary, higher vocational and other education (Education Act) and Decree No. 27/2016 Coll., on education of pupils with special educational needs and talented pupils (Amendment No. 248/2019 Coll., effective from 1 January 2020) have brought a number of changes to the system of education in order to improve the educational conditions of pupils with special educational needs in mainstream elementary schools. These changes have affected both pupils and teachers, who are now subject to specific requirements and demands in the context of joint education. The aim of the research was to focus on this area with a certain time delay and identify, analyse, and interpret the experience of primary school teachers with joint education. The qualitative research study was conducted by means of semi-structured interviews with primary school teachers. The results of the research showed that the experience of the teachers included in the research sample with joint education was rather positive. The research also suggested a number of factors that influenced the success of joint education.
