IMPROVEMENT OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHERВ’S PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE THROUGH TRAINING COURSES

Abstract

The implementation of the Russian professional standard for teachers has determined the topicality of the study. The main aim of this research is the improvement of English language teachersВ’ professional competence within the system of training courses on EL methodology. During the research the theoretical, empirical, diagnostic methods were used. Theoretical methods included the analysis of the problem and the subject of research, systematic and logical analysis, a holistic approach to the study of pedagogical phenomena, the modeling of pedagogical phenomena, the study of sources. The empirical methods consisted of the study and generalization of teaching experience, diagnostic conversation, pedagogical observation, pedagogical experiment. The methods of pedagogical measurements like questioning, monitoring, tests were used as well as a method of assessment, self-assessment, analysis of sections, course works and results. A substantive analysis of the state standard and the documents of the Council of Europe on the selection of content and levels of training was also completed. The questionnaires of teachers with the purpose of determining the level of formation of skills and skills of foreign-language business communication among teachers, revealing the level of skills and skills of practical use of modern technologies in the educational process and the level of the formation of key competencies among teachers were used. Professional competence testing (input, intermediate and final control in the PD system) was conducted in order to check the level of communication, linguistic, sociocultural, discursive competence of teachers and determining the content of educational programs in the PD system. The research took place in KHMAO-Ugra region involving more than 250 teachers of English. Surveys, testing and exam performance of the teachers after completing the course indicated its effectiveness in their methodological and language competence level. The results of the study indicated that there is a significant difference between teachersВ’ methodological and English language competences after completing a training course based on the preparation materials for Cambridge Teacher Knowledge Test (TKT) and Cambridge Advanced English exam. The result of teachersВ’ perception about teaching terminology, techniques through getting ready to the teachersВ’ exam, indicated the r?tionale of this research. All materials, presentations and communicative activities used during the training course were aimed at raising teacherВ’s professional competence. Running methodological training course in English helps teachers perform better and improve their professional competence.
