Abstract

University teacher is a factor which determines the level of the educational process, but also the level of scientific and research activities. Recently, there can be permanently witnessed the efforts at the national level by stressing the importance of the project and research activities in higher education institutions. In the process of quality assessment are mostly preferred quantitative indicators. The development of personality of students, however, contributes significantly to the level of teaching activity and personality traits, ethics of university teachers, the level of development of their communication and social skills, but those are paradoxically not the subject of quality assessment at universities. These areas may be developed through lifelong learning of university teachers. This lifelong learning may include courses in higher education pedagogy. The paper briefly describes an example of pedagogical and psychological training of university teachers at the Slovak University of Agriculture. In line with the current trends in the education of engineers in the international context, this type of training also includes a newly designed course Ethics and intercultural competences. In this paper we briefly present the content, organization and experience in teaching this course. The need for such type of education is also explained in the paper.
