YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT PROBLEM IN LATVIA COMPARED WITH BELARUS
Abstract
The decline of population is one of the most important indicators, which shows that in Latvia there is need to promote the employment of young people, with enabling them to learn, live and work in Latvia. The first job experience as well as education, training and practical skills are considered to be a crucial precondition for young people to start their employment career and provide future possibilities for their development and social status in society. The research object is the labour market situation for young people in Latvia in comparison with Belarus. The youth integration into the labour market is determined by employer decisions to employ young people regardless of their experience and education. The principal materials used for the research are as follows: different sources of scientific papers and research results of a questionnaire survey in Latvia and Belarus. Two questionnaire surveys of the young in the age group 17 to 30 were performed – in Latvia (n=600) and in Belarus (n=96). The results of analysis show the main trends – in Latvia there are difficulties to find a job, in comparison with Belarus. The young people from Latvia without any experience in the relevant field and without higher or professional education and motivation to study and acquire the necessary skills are negatively evaluated. The young people in Belarus are positively disposed in the labour market and most of the respondents were employed in the enterprise where they had practice. In Latvia that kind of tendency is not observed.
