THE BATTLE OF MEGIDDO AND THE EASTERN LEGION
Abstract
During the First World War, the Battle of Megiddo (19-25 September, 1918) was decisive on the Palestinian front, and the Turkish army was crushed. After this defeat, the Turks and Germans could not demonstrate an organized resistance. General Allenby's Egyptian Expeditionary Force liberated Lebanon, Syria, and Cilicia from the Turks. The operation had been planned very secretly and organized brilliantly. The cavalry and air force worked together closely during the battle. The Eastern Legion of the French army took part in that battle near the hills of Rafat-Arara. The Legion consisted of Armenian and Syrian volunteers under the command of French officers. General Allenby thanked the head of the Armenian National Delegation Boghos Nubar for the Armenian soldiers' courage in the Battle of Megiddo.
