TRUMP AND GLOBALIZATION : THE DISILLUSION AFTER THE FASCINATION!
Abstract
Nobody will contest these days that economic globalization has become a prime target. Thus, for many, it would be the main source of the Brexit victory in the UK, the significant advances of populist parties in Europe, and finally, a big factor of neo-protectionism, largely driven by the election of Donald Trump! On the other hand, if these "political upheavals or anomalies" have found some ground in this phenomenon, their anchoring is clearly elsewhere. In particular, there is a huge perception of the impotence of the political elites to curb the harmful effects of globalization linked to offshoring, to the worrying rise of inequalities since 1980 and to the new-protectionism illustrated by the Trump economic war, especially against China. However, it is still necessary to ensure the right balance in this questioning of the globalization phenomenon, especially by M. Trump. As Montesquieu pointed out in De lВ’esprit des lois: "The nations who negotiate together are mutually dependent: if one has an interest in buying, the other has an interest in selling; and all unions are based on mutual needs". An observation and a reality that many decision makers have not yet understood, in particular, the US President!
