PROTECTION, PROMOTION AND USE OF CULTURAL HERITAGE THROUGH THE ORGANIZATION OF EXPO 2022 AS A CHANCE TO SAVE THE POST-INDUSTRIAL CITY
Abstract
The International Exhibition is often identified with a chance for development for the applicant's city areas. Nevertheless, as the experiences of the host cities show, the sustainable use of change potential is extremely difficult. Therefore, already in the creation process of the exhibition theme, it is important for the exhibition to become an element influencing the evolution of the area and not the final stage of its development. The choice of revitalisation as the theme of the International Exhibition EXPO 2022, which one of the largest Polish cities – located in central Poland ?ód? – would like to organize, seems to be successful from the point of view of both national and European Union urban policy. Revitalisation is also the central axis of urban policy in ?ód?, and the city itself is the biggest beneficiary of European Union funds for revitalisation in Poland The article presents the role that protection, promotion and use of cultural heritage plays in the ?ód? revitalisation as well as in the plans of the International EXPO Exhibition in 2022. The researches were furthermore situated in a broader context of the importance of heritage protection in the process of revitalisation and revitalisation itself in the current urban policy of the European Union. Research methods used in the article include the dogmatic method for the analysis of legal acts and European Union documents concerning urban policy, as well as the empirical method for urban research. The article concludes that the role of cultural heritage is not sufficiently exposed in both Polish and wider European Union urban policy, and that ?ód? experiences, particularly supported by the possibility of organizing the International EXPO 2022, may prove essential to verify the European Union position in this regard.
