THE CULTURAL AND SYMBOLIC POTENTIAL OF MUROM IN THE CONTEXT OF THE REGIONAL CULTURAL SPACE DEVELOPMENT
Abstract
Culture is a set of codes that prescribe to a person a certain behavior with inherent experiences and thoughts, thus controlling him. Culture plays an important role for maintaining and reproducing material and spiritual values, as well as intellectual products of human activity. Reproduction of culture is very closely connected with the notion of “cultural potential”. Potential is a collection of available resources and opportunities in a certain area that can be used to achieve a certain goal or solve a specific problem. Thus, cultural potential can be defined as a set of cultural resources that is placed in nature and accumulated by society in the form of spiritual results of human labor. In the narrower meaning, the concept of cultural potential represents a combination of all the opportunities and factors that can contribute to the development of the cultural space of the region or city. There are several components of the cultural potential: architectural uniqueness, natural-landscape uniqueness and historical and cultural uniqueness. Murom is one of the oldest cities in Russia, a coeval of Russian statehood, a city with a thousand-year history. Murom is not only externally, but also spiritually beautiful and rich in its historical values. The urban space was formed around Orthodox monasteries and temples, and the whole life of its citizens was permeated with faith and connected with the church. Local cultural heritage embodies Russian national values: the supremacy of spiritual power over the physical (Ilya Muromets), the value of family, love and faithfulness (Prince Peter and Princess Fevronia), service to people (Juliania Lazarevskaya). Thus, in the study of cultural and symbolic potential as a factor of preservation and demand for cultural heritage its significance and functions act as the integral parts of the socio-cultural space of the region at the present stage. The synthesis of preserving and reconstructing of the national cultural traditions in the cultural potential allows us to find those optimal conditions, through which the cultural heritage of the provincial city will be actualized. Revealing of the identification component of the regional cultural and symbolic potential is the most important condition for the development of society in the current crisis situation. It positively influences the character of the modern youth values and determines the moral direction of the processes of professional and social self-determination of young people.
