INDIVIDUAL IDENTITY IN THE POSTMODERN ERA - - CRITICAL THOUGHTS
Abstract
The paper examines the significance of an individual identity in the context of the postmodern era. The analysis touches upon the subject of self-identity, which is treated as a processual, dynamic and contextual phenomenon. According to contemporary deliberations, it is risky to state that an identity is something that one can possess. It is better to speak of a continuous process of identifications that allows individuals to define themselves or others. Although an individual identity is seen as the result (product) of modernity it is widely underlined that there is a big challenge to construct it in the context of the postmodern era. The analysis focuses on a comparative study of two theorists (Anthony Giddens and Zygmunt Bauman) and is an attempt to formulate critical thoughts on the present-day vision of individual identity and its significance in an individual life. While Giddens' concept of late modernity is a milieu for self-identity, Bauman's postmodernity (fluid modernity) creates the ground for its construction. It results in different visions of individual identity and its role in personal life.
