Abstract

The aim of the present study is to assess the relations between both subjective (e.g. traumatic fear, perceived threat to oneВ’s life) and objective trauma appraisal (e.g. number of days of hospitalization, number of deaths, physical wounds) and posttraumatic stress (PTSD) symptoms in victims of road traffic accidents (RTA). Furthermore, we wanted to identify the moderating role of traffic locus of control (T-LOC) (internal and external T-LOC) in the relations between objective and subjective trauma appraisal and PTSD symptoms. A sample consisting of 162 participants that experienced an RTA in the last two years (62.3 % were men, Mage = 29.37, driving experience in years: M = 8.34, SD = 7.19) was involved in the study. The results showed that traumatic fear is the strongest predictor of all PTSD clusters of symptoms. Further, traffic locus of control interacted with subjective and objective trauma appraisal in predicting PTSD symptoms. The implications of these results for interventions are discussed.
