Abstract

In economy based on knowledge, a combination of employees’ skills and experience as well as their engagement in the process of acquiring competences, is not only a factor that shapes the organizational culture but the one which allows for confirming the effectiveness of entrusted tasks’ completion and group work management. Human resources management is an activity which increases both the quality and efficiency of work. It enables increasing the effectiveness of an enterprise and, in consequence, gaining competitive advantage. This is particularly important in manufacturing activity. Therefore, the article focuses on presenting the essence and differences in the notions “qualifications” and “competences”. A relationship between the competence model and evaluation has been presented. One of the instruments for managing human resources in an organization, i.e. competence matrix, has been discussed. The author of the article has proved that it can become a tool that enables identification of competence gaps, and, thus, planning of the training needs of direct production employees. The main goal of the study was to present the possibilities and limitations of applying a competence matrix to schedule production activities in the area of discrete processes. In the author’s opinion, this is an innovative solution. This aim could be achieved owing to the author’s own research conducted in selected production companies.
