DEVELOPMENT OF THE OPTICS SECTOR IN LATVIA

Abstract

Companies producing lenses for glasses and contact lenses operate in the sector of high technologies, consequently, the production has high added value. Sustainable development requires a more rapid development of medium high and high technologies sectors. One of the options is development of production of optical vision correction means in Latvia, which would increase the proportion of medium high and high technology manufacturing in the common structure of manufacturing. The analysis was performed guiding by the available data – the information provided by the Latvian Association of Optometrists and Opticians, publications, scientific studies, data published by the Central Statistical Bureau, Lursoft and Eurostat as well as separate mass communication portals. The aim of the research is to evaluate the optometry activity in Latvia and identify the direction of development strategy of optical product manufacturing, which would be able to ensure further development of both optometry and national economy. The results of the research show that promotion of optical products manufacturing in Latvia is a complex measure, which cannot be developed investing only in production. It is also necessary to develop the availability of qualified specialists as well as the activity of optical salons. In addition, the support opportunities of the EU financial instruments should be used as efficiently and rationally as it is possible, thus facilitating the development and competitiveness of accompany. Extra investments could ensure the competitiveness of Latvian companies at the local and national level, facilitating also the growth of national economy.
