THE UNIVERSITY PROFESSORDOM AND THE STUDENT MOVEMENT IN RUSSIA AT THE TURN OF THE XIX-XX CENTURIES
Abstract
The article is devoted to the attitude of university professors of the Russian Empire to the student movement in the late XIX – early XX century. The powerful surge of student protest movement took place at the turn of the centuries. The movement, changing the content, became more politicized and, no doubt, it was a harbinger of the revolutions of 1905 and 1917. The activation of the student movement caused a controversy reaction of Russian society including the academic environment. Many professors were in a quandary of the internal contradictions between the official duties and civil position. The article, mainly relying on the archival documents that were extracted from the archives in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kiev, Odessa, Kharkov, Kazan, Tomsk, illustrates how the student protests affected the teaching staff in different universities, what was a mutual reaction of the rebellious students to the actions of professors and vice versa in different cases. The author of the article comes to the conclusion on the issue of the student movement, the university teachers were divided into different groups and their attitude to the student protests ultimately depended on the political affiliation and civil position of particular professors and privatdocents of the university network of the Russian Empire.
