MEDICAL AND SOCIOLOGICAL ASPECTS OF TRANSSEXUALISM IN POLAND
Abstract
The paper focuses on some medical and sociological problems of Inborn Gender Identity Disorder Syndrome (IGIDS), the so-called transsexualism. It reflects on an in-depth reading of publications exploring the question of transsexualism, as well as the experiences resulting from medical care of such individuals. In short, the analysis bases on both medical experience in diagnostics and treatment of people with this syndrome, as well as several publications in the field of social sciences. The aim of the paper is an attempt to reconsider this problem and its social consequences that face the people with IGIDS. Their medical treatment and real social problems are described in order to improve the awareness of this phenomenon in public opinion. Although there are new publications concerning this syndrome, one can observe several myths and misunderstandings of both the problem and difficult relationships of transsexual individuals.
