INDUSTRIAL HERITAGE EDUCATION BY VIRTUAL REALITY

Abstract

Industrial heritage provides one of the most important records of social progress and urban development and continues to have international potential for education and development as confirmed by the joint ICOMOS – TICCIH Principles for the Conservation of Industrial Heritage Sites in 2011. A global problem is young persons’ decreasing interest in studying natural sciences, architecture and engineering, knowledge of which is a prerequisite for further technological progress and socio-economic development. This paper presents the aim/potential to use the latest interactive virtual reality (VR) devices for informal education in technical and natural sciences in the energy/electricity sector. This is also the KEGA project goal of the interdisciplinary team at the Slovak University of Technology. In combination with an identified conserved valuable part of the building, preserved original equipment and archival plans, the hypothetical virtual appearance of an old industrial power plant in Piestany was reconstructed. This practical result - interactive virtual tool - educates about lost heritage that should be remembered. VR documents original methodology that allows viewers to look closer at old industrial heritage and experience the former atmosphere of industrial work. VR insights of this machinery hall in Piestany with high technical immersion has a clear educational impact, leveraging an appropriate and meaningful use of VR in heritage education. Contemporary use of VR technology has confirmed the high efficiency of the learning process.
