ENGLISH FOR THEOLOGICAL PURPOSES – A ROMANIAN PERSPECTIVE
Abstract
Inspired by our experience as an associate assistant of English with the 2nd year students at the Faculty of Orthodox Theology Dumitru Staniloae, Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iasi, Romania, this paper purports to account for the gaps that need filling in a less developed branch of English for Specific Purposes (ESP), namely theological English. After overviewing the status of the discipline, we intend to make suggestions towards the improvement of the Orthodox content for the purpose of developing students’ productive and receptive skills in a communicative language teaching context. Thus, our hope is to bridge the gap between general religious topics adjusted to a language learning environment of the few available textbooks worldwide equally addressing all (pre-experience) Christian learners of English and our vocational Orthodox ones.
