FINANCIAL LITERACY OF SOCIAL WORK STUDENTS

Abstract

The aim of the paper is to measure the level of financial literacy of students of the Social Work study programs in their last study year, as many experts are convinced that social workers are suitable professionals to help individuals and families with an advisory on finance and debt counselling in the context of accompaniment and social counselling. The authors chose a quantitative research strategy and used the data collection method of a questionnaire, which was composed of three parts: socio-demographic characteristics, financial literacy test and self-evaluation of financial literacy. The subjects of the research were students of the second - last year of the Master's degree in Social Work in Slovakia. The research was carried out on the whole core of three study programmes Social Work, Social Work in Public Administration and Social Services and Counselling and Social Communication. The success of our respondents in the financial literacy test was lower than expected and reached only 52.25%. In our hypothesis, we assumed that the level of financial literacy of the participants is higher than the level of financial literacy of the Slovak general population. At the same time, we found that respondents were unrealistic about their own financial literacy. Their self-assessment was higher than their real score in the financial literacy test. Based on research, we think that if we want to involve social workers in debt counselling, they need to be intensively educated in this area.
