N.Y. GROT ON THE SITUATION IN RUSSIAN PHILOSOPHY IN THE LATE 1880S
Abstract
The current study is focused on the influence of Nikolai Yakovlevich Grot (1852-1899) on the formation and institutionalization processes in Russian philosophy in the late 1880s. As the editor of the journal “Questions of Philosophy and Psychology” (Voprosi filosofii I psikhologii), Grot transforms this edition into the first press organ which accepts all the philosophical trends. This article aimed at examinating how Grot perceives positivistic, materialistic, scientific and metaphysical concepts, including the issue of free will and determinism. The major point of this study is to clarify Grot’s personal philosophical attitude expressed in his idea that “Tolerance is not the indifference to the truth”. The study is based on comparative method and historical analysis. The comparison of three different positions, like religious (Vl. Solovyev, Archbishop Nikanor), positivist (Vl. Lesevich, G. Vyrubov) and Grot’s personal, reveals two principal changes in Russian philosophy. The first change is the gradual transition from positivism to metaphysics. The second one is to suspend the isolation and separation and choose interaction and openness. Despite being neglected, Grot’s philosophical work becomes a very important and valuable source of knowledge that shows the specifics of Russian philosophy during its self-determination period.
