REVEALING AN OPPORTUNITY FOR ARCHITECTURAL CREATIVITY: COMPREHENDING THE SOCIAL ROLE OF ARCHITECTURE IN THE DESIGN STUDIO
Abstract
The power of capitalist demands from architects necessitates reconsidering the social role of architecture especially in the curricula of architectural design studios. Contrary to the conception that inflexible demands limit student creativity, this study aims to question whether these limitations are opportunities for students to discover the function of architectural solutions for a social purpose in individual, communal and urban scales. The research was conducted for the 2014 Spring Semester's experience in a design studio at Gazi University Department of Architecture, Ankara. The assignment was to design a housing project for university students in an urban renovation district next to a University Campus. The special emphasis of the faculty was making the students conceptualize the social role of architecture. At the end of the semester the internal consistency within the student design team projects' problem definitions, design concepts and solution methods was considered as the indicator for the quality of their design experiences. The main finding of the study was that assuming architectural design as spatial agency was a primary motive for determining this consistency.
