A COMPOSER... A POET... A MELOGRAM
Abstract
The song cycle “Intoarceri la Blaga” ("Revisiting Blaga") for soprano and piano, part of composer Viorel Munteanu's oeuvre, is both a moment of synthesis and the crowning of a creative effort spanning several decades. Starting from a melogram created using the name of the poet Lucian Blaga, the composer constructs a mode that will become the foundation for the motifs that will generate the entire cycle of seven miniatures. The specialists will appreciate the composer's craft, which has transformed just a few sounds into an impressive and accomplished suite of works that flow in sequence according to the contrast principle, creating sonorous worlds that eventually come together as a whole. This article aims to explore briefly the sound universe of these pieces, following the connection between music and words, as well as the subtle manner of highlighting the philosophical and transcendental ideas that are present in the text. Given that the art of sound is in itself an abstract form of language, we have focused on the composition techniques in terms of main parameters (melody, rhythm, harmony, polyphony, form), attempting to justify the manner in which the composer used them in order to enhance the moods created by the poems. The main philosophical ideas of the text are also discussed, the text analysis accompanying the music analysis, in parallel, as it is obvious that the two forms of art are complementary in the case of vocal-instrumental works.
