Abstract

Introduction. In the last decades the idea that exercising for better fitness is in fact “exercising for health” has been accredited, because physical-sport activities constitute a direct stimulus, almost exclusive of morpho-functional and motric development, as a premise of an optimal state of health. Numerous scientists have dealt with the influence physical exercises have on improving health and physical condition. Research Methods: In preparing the paper we used the following research methods: - Study of literature; Observation and teaching experiment; Method of measuring and testing at the beginning and end of the experiment, the subjects were tested in functional terms, with the Ruffier test. The data obtained from tests and measurements were analyzed and interpreted using statistical and mathematical methods and graphical representation. The group used for the investigation included a total of 240 students of the University of Bucharest, who participated in a physical education class once per week; to these lessons a program of sport activities was added 3-5 times per week with a duration of 45-60 minutes. Independent of this experiment was a natural activities program for improving physical fitness, consisting of aerobics, dance, swimming and jogging, students opting for one or several sports. After statistical processing of the gathered data from the recorded experiments the following results were obtained: a) By applying t test, there was a significant increase in the exercise capacity of the students that participated in more sport programs per week, and the null hypothesis is rejected; b) The control group Ruffier index values remained approx. same, t-test shows that there were no significant increases. c) The physical condition of students with a greater number of participation in sport activities is greatly increased. Conclusions a) The practice of sport, systematically, consistently improves the health and fitness b) Through a regular and rhythmic exercise program the cardiovascular activity is improved, as evidenced by increased exercise capacity and by a lower heart rate during rest, which is a major element of preventing heart disorders. c) To summarize the study, in order to highlight the benefits of sport for optimal physical condition, it can be concluded that physical activity has a beneficial role for the body, both physically and mentally.
