PRODUCTION COMPETITIVENESS IN LATVIAN FISHERIES SECTOR

Abstract

In the modern economy, competitiveness is put forward as one of the conditions of economic recovery. In order a sector to be competitive and viable in the long term, and to be successful in its activity, the sector has to ensure competitive production. Production competitiveness is a significant factor determining the sector's development potential. The goal of the research is to evaluate the production competitiveness of Latvian fisheries sector. On the grounds of the author's offered evaluation methodology and guiding by the available data and their quality, the author analyzed the production competitiveness of Latvian fisheries sector according to the aspect of capacity, use intensity and efficiency of production capital involved in production process as well as from the aspect of labour efficiency. The results of the research identified the factors currently ensuring the production competitiveness of Latvian fisheries sector and provided an insight into the need in structural reforms. The information included in the research may assist the institutions involved in establishment and implementation of fisheries policy, entrepreneurs and researchers to better understand the importance of production competitiveness in ensuring growth of Latvian fisheries sector. The results of the research may help to develop and improve the common policy of the sector more successfully.
