CHANGES IN THE FRENCH PUNCTUATION SYSTEM
Abstract
The paper is devoted to the study of the French punctuation system development and processes taking place in it currently. The views of researchers, regarding the criteria for punctuation marks and their classification, have been considered. Punctuation (broadly understood) is integrated into a system that includes not only traditional text punctuation marks, but also typographic graphic signs. There is a possibility for expanding the punctuation system of modern French. Contemporary French-speaking authors widely use various graphic signs, thus revealing their expressive potential. One of the means of punctuation in the modern system is the peripheral font, which has semantic, syntactic and prosodic characteristics of nuclear punctuation marks. The analysis of contemporary fiction has allowed us to conclude that the role of the font as a sign of the text syntax has changed. Its size and graphic do not simply perform an aesthetic function in the visual perception of a text. The research results have revealed that the font in contemporary fiction contributes to the text meaning. New functions of peripheral punctuation marks and changes that occur in the punctuation system of the French language have been discussed.
