MONUMENTAL RELIGIOUS PAINTING OF VYATKA
Abstract
The goal of the research is the content, style and specificity of historic monumental paintings in Orthodox churches in Vyatka (now the Kirov region) in Russia. Nowadays many of the villages with the churches are abandoned as people moved to the cities. The wall paintings are on the edge of disappearing both physically and from the realm of academic study. Therefore a significant part of cultural heritage of the region is at stake. Since 1989, we have conducted inspection of more than 150 churches, the monumental paintings оf which I dated as belonging to the 18th–20st centuries. The research methods include expeditionary and archival stages, as well as iconographic and stylistic analysis of monumental painting. All the information has been complied into a database, which has been systematized on both a geographical basis and in chronological order. Such a thorough study has revealed local traditions, specificities, themes and plots. I have completed an iconographic reconstruction of several monumental paintings based on written contracts and plans of the interiors. Names of some local and visiting artists working in these churches were established. We have begun publishing the Code of architecture and monumental art of Kirov region. This research is important because of its impact on the cultural, educational and touristic spheres. It also helps expand knowledge about provincial religious art
