Abstract

The main purpose of this research is to reveal the financial events which, in unfavorable economic conditions, emotionally arouse in students either a negative or a positive reaction. The research is based on the hypothesis that there is a difference in the psychological perception of events relating to the objective economic life conditions of a student and to events connected with his personal economic activity. Students of the Humanities Departments of the Ural Federal University underwent the survey. The information was collected by way of filling in forms. Respondents were offered to describe the events that were connected with money and finances that took place in the period from September 2014 to November 2015. Correlation and cluster analysis was applied to process the received data. The rise in prices, mostly more expensive services, was among the events that aroused negative emotions. The emotionally positive events in most cases were connected with the fact that students began to earn their own money and make purchases of their own. The correlation analysis revealed that events connected with the students’ own earnings and purchasing of consumer goods and services exert an independent from each other influence on the emergence of positive emotions. Both the students’ own earnings and a good purchase point to a definite success in their economic activity. The cluster analysis results showed the existence of two typological groups among the respondents – those who were successful and those who were not. They differ both by the type of their economic activity and by the type of their emotions. We may say that the fact that students come to see their consumer and labor activity as a success helps raise the subjective quality of their life even in unfavorable economic conditions. The revealed regularity can help to work out the mechanisms of interrelatedness between the quality of students’ life activity and that of its conditions.
