COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF OSSETIAN AND ENGLISH PROVERBS AND SAYINGS IN THE LEXICAL SEMANTIC ASPECT
Abstract
The paper presents thematic groups of proverbs and sayings of two Indo-European languages - Ossetian and English. The study of paroemias in various languages is undoubtedly relevant, since they are a part of the human culture. The matching method determines a degree of their semantic proximity and similarity of the lexical composition. Proverbs and sayings that have survived through oral folk art are simple in form, but capacious in content expressions. It should be noted that they are numerous and varied in Ossetian and English. In our work, we have focused only on those that are widely spoken in these languages. The content of proverbs and sayings sums up the idea approved by generations, expressing it easily and understandably, not directly but idiomatically, with one or another deviation from the stereotypical perception of a phrase meaning, revealing the elements of understatement, congestion, solving the complex tasks of intercultural communication by conveying information to an interlocutor in a short generalized form. The research contains a list of proverbs and sayings of the Ossetian and English languages that are identical in the meaning and completely or partially coincide in their lexical composition, which prove the identity of the historical experience of their speakers, as well as the language relationship.
