CODE-SWITCHING IN CHILDREN'S SPEECH, ACQUIRING A FOREIGN LANGUAGE IN A MONOLINGUAL ENVIRONMENT

Abstract

The objective of the study is to reconstruct and describe the structure of a code-switching mechanism, functioning in the speech of Russian pre-school children, acquiring English language in a monolingual environment (without natural communication). A code-switching mechanism is studied on the survey of children’s code-mixing texts, received from an artificial bilingual environment – play situations with a talking setting to speak English. The article sets out, that the activity of a code-switching mechanism in child’s speech is caused by three factors: a guideline on a target language; communicative verbal experience, formed in a Russian socio-cultural environment; and its bilingual competence. Code-switching is characterized as a socio-psycholinguistic mechanism, which touches upon a discourse level and all language levels (including a sentence, a word, a word form and a morpheme). The results of the study correct an integrated model of code-switching by an ontolinguistic aspect.
